What’s In A Name?…

I have been meaning to write this post for a few weeks now, however I have been limited to blogging on my iPad and writing a post on that sucker takes 3x as long as using an actual computer. Husby is out right now, and I have taken his editing computer over to do some blogging!

Patience and Cash.. the two little boob leeches that have become the loves of my life. Their names hold quite a bit of meaning to Chad and I, and while we didn’t commit to these names until after we met them they were at the top of our list for a few months.

Boy names that did not make the cut: Thor, Jude, Ashton (that was a grandma suggestion), Floyd, Pony Boy and/or Soda Pop (I am just saying, if we would’ve had 2 boys I would’ve fought for these!!!), Jager, and some other cray cray viking name that Chad was pushing for a while (Unkar?).

Girl names that did not make the cut: Penelope (this was one of my favorites), Prudence (this was actually a super close second), Ashley (another grandma suggestion, get it- Ashton and Ashley), and Ginger.

Oh, and then there was the brief moment when I was in labor when the husband joked about naming them Carrie and Jason in honor of them being born on Friday the 13th. That was the last joke that he made while I was in labor. Anyway…

Cash Elvis Aaron V. Not that I think anyone is paying close attention, but I have mentioned before that my husband has been a sober fella for about 10 years now. What I haven’t mentioned that his love for both Johnny Cash and music are without bounds. Anyway, as we were bouncing boy names back and forth I remembered a conversation that we had had years ago about how inspirational Mr. Cash has always been to him as a man who seemed irredeemable but ultimately became a symbol of how much people can change if they are willing to do so. The name Elvis was actually one of Chad’s first suggestions, you know- just because he is so cool (yes we thought of the fact that Elvis died of an overdose), ultimately I was happy with Elvis as long as Unkar was no longer an option. Aaron is Chad’s (and Elvis’) middle name.

Patience Rae-Jean V. Ok, I was really really really pushing a couple of “P” names before we got to Patience, but they both were instantly shot down by Chad so when I came up with this one I didn’t expect it to stick. When I say came up with, I mean we were listening to a tribute band perform Guns and Roses’ Patience and I said “Hey, what do you think of the name Patience?”. It didn’t get shot down right away, and the longer we sat with it the more significant and personal it became. Rae-Jean is the name of Chad’s older sister that was born prematurely and only lived for a few short days. It was really important to him to use her name since he feels that she is the one who is taking care of our lost babies now (the first time he told me this I cried for 2 days). Rae is also my middle name so that worked out pretty nicely.

Even though we had though of these names well before the babies arrived we actually never referred to the babies by them until after they were born. As soon as Patience was pushed out Chad said, “she looks just like a Patience!” and Cash was the first one to let out a raspy wail, so we know he is going to have an amazing voice. It is kind of funny though because we called them Baby Girl and Baby Boy for so long we still end up calling them that most of the time.

So there you have it, the stories behind the names. Also, the stories that explain why you almost always can count on hearing Chad sing Walk the Line, Ring of Fire, and Patience at least 5 times a day.
